MARSHAL JÓZEF PILSUDSKI BRIDGE – IMPLEMENTATION
ARCHITECTURE: PPiPST Altrans
2021 KRAKÓW
The primary task of illuminating the Marszałek Józef Piłsudski Bridge was to expose the historic value of the structure, its sophisticated proportions and original riveted steel structure. Instead of high-powered projectors, the designers used a larger number of small and medium-sized luminaires, optimally positioned so that most of them were not visible from human level. They were precisely directed at the elements to be illuminated.
The main superstructure is the most important and recognisable element of the bridge. Proper lighting of this element was crucial to the perception of the entire project. The striking structural arches, connected by a series of transverse trusses and tie-beams, are the most interesting element of the bridge and are a form recognisable from afar against all other bridges in Krakow. The subdued and precisely directed lighting allowed the natural beauty of the bridge structure to be highlighted by the light, and the cool colour of the light harmonises perfectly with the blue of the structure.
The lower part of the bridge - the palate and the edge of the pavement - is the element that connects the two banks with a single line of light. It can function as an independent light scene - the line of the road is visible, while the unlit arches fade into darkness.
